Sandra Navarro Valdés (1959), es una ingeniera en fotos aéreas geodésicas devenida artesana artista que refleja en sus obras ese amor por el medio ambiente, los animales, la armonía y la paz. Es una de las creadoras más premiadas en eventos organizados por el ACAA en Camagüey, cuyo centro histórico es Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.
Recuerda con brillos en los ojos que su vocación por los trabajos artesanales comenzó en la infancia en el taller de ebanistería de su padre.
«Desde niña me vinculé a las artes, pintaba, dibujaba y creaba con las manos. En la familia paterna casi todos son carpinteros, ebanistas y mi abuelo realizaba misceláneas»,
Cuando Sandra cursaba el noveno grado en la Enseñanza Secundaria se presentó a las pruebas en la Escuela de Arte de Camagüey, pero aunque tuvo notas sobresalientes no se decidió incorporarse al decidirse por otra especialidad en el Instituto Técnico Militar de La Habana.
Sandra nunca dejó de pintar, ni dibujar… participaba en actividades en las casas de cultura. Desde 1996 integra la Asociación Cubana de Artesanos Artistas en Camagüey e incursiona en todas las manifestaciones.
«En el año 2004 realizo mis primeras exposiciones en cerámica artística modelando el barro a mano. Creo mis vasijas levantadas todas a mano y luego le incluyo elementos decorativos».
A través de la cerámica expresa su amor al medio ambiente y al entorno natural que la rodea. «Me gusta mucho el tema animalista. La mayoría de mis obras tienen referencias a los animales y a los insectos».
Y esa pasión por la naturaleza está presente entre otras colecciones en «Sandroides: supervivencia» una propuesta escultórica en la que la artista alerta desde Camagüey la necesidad de la preservación de las especies que habitan el planeta, muchas en peligro de extinción.

Añadió que la fauna ha sufrido daños y que desde el punto de vista artístico pretende alertar que de continuar la depredación de las especies en un futuro la tierra estará habitada por mecanismos creados por el ingenio humano.
La artista creó un conjunto de animales futuristas cuyo sorprendente atractivo no reside tanto en la exactitud escultórica o en la violencia figurativa sino más bien, en la coherente integración de pequeños universos mecánicos a la arquitectura corpórea del animal.
La autora pone a convivir, en una misma pieza, conceptos tales como dinamismo, energía, movilidad, transmisión, iluminación y cerramiento-continuidad.
Sandra siempre está presente con su obra en la mayoría de los salones y concursos auspiciados por la Asociación Cubana de Artesanos Artistas y otras instituciones culturales de la provincia de Camagüey, entre otras regiones del país.
Se recuerda en el concurso provincial «De lo bello a lo útil», en el cual resultó la más laureada, con tres galardones entre los 50 autores y 82 obras, aunque en esa oportunidad no concurrió con piezas de cerámicas.
A su larga lista de exposiciones personales se suma igualmente el proyecto de piezas trasmutadas y las libélulas…las mujeres trasmutadas titulado «Peréceme« con la curaduría del critico de arte Pavel Alejandro Barrios. «Tomo las partes más sensibles de las libélulas, las alas y el movimiento para incorporar al cuerpo femenino. En mis cerámicas utilizo las patinas en frio como cubierta».
Sandra Navarro Valdés incursiono el tema de horóscopo chino tras una profunda investigación en torno al tema.
«Plasmé todos los animales del horóscopo chino y los incorporé a vasijas. Cada vez que preparo un proyecto lo elaboro minuciosamente. Primero creo un boceto y luego lo llevo a la cerámica.
«La mayoría de mis piezas se han comercializado en la Feria Internacional de Artesanía (FIART), de La Habana, convocada por Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, en la que concurrí desde 2009 hasta 2012. En 2009 obtuve Mención al Mejor Diseño de Stand. Mi Stand siempre fue muy visitado y elogiado por especialista y espectadores».
Sandra atesora un bello currículo como artesana. «Si formo parte de una asociación como el ACCA tengo la responsabilidad de poner en manos de los receptores una obra de calidad y con valor visual y estético».
Siente infinito orgullo de que sus piezas embellezcan hogares de coleccionistas y personas en muchos países del mundo, especialmente en Estados Unidos, Canadá, y otros países de América y Europa.
«Representé a Cuba en 2018 en la Exposición Internacional Itinerante de Cerámica y Pintura titulada «Agua», en Canadá, junto a dos colegas de la ciudad de Trinidad y cuatro canadienses. Continúe mi temática al moldear allá en barro, cuatro piezas esmaltadas. Me decidí por especies del mar».
Sandra Navarro Valdés devela que su nacimiento el 17 de febrero de 1959 influyó notablemente en su proyección artística. «Los acuarios somos muy sensibles a las artes. Aunque en medio materno que me crié no era artístico, mi mama siempre me buscaba las pinturas y otros recursos para que yo realizaba mis dibujos. Me encerraba en el baño para que mis tres hermanos me dejaran crear. (Sandra es la mayor). Tengo la convicción de que si tiene que ver la fecha de nacimiento con la inclinación al arte. Tengo dos hijos y mi a mi hija también le fascina la cerámica y me acompañaba en las Ferias de La Habana. Pinta mis cerámicas».

A Cuban engineer with a passion for art and nature (+ Photos)

May, 2021.- Sandra Navarro Valdés (1959), is an engineer in geodesic aerial photos turned artisan artist who reflects in her works that love for the environment, animals, harmony and peace.
She is one of the most awarded creators in events organized by the Cuban Association of Artisan Artists (ACAA) in Camagüey, whose historic center is a World Heritage Site.
She remembers with sparkles in her eyes that her vocation for handicrafts began in childhood in her father’s cabinetmaker’s workshop.
«Since I was a child I was linked to the arts, I painted, drew and created with my hands. In the paternal family almost all of them are carpenters, cabinetmakers and my grandfather did miscellanies ».
When Sandra was in the ninth grade in Secondary Education, she took the tests at the Camagüey School of Art, but although she had outstanding grades, she did not decide to join when deciding on another specialty at the Military Technical Institute of Havana.
Sandra never stopped painting, or drawing … she participated in activities in the houses of culture. Since 1996, he has been a member of the Cuban Association of Artisan Artists in Camagüey and has participated in all the manifestations.
«In 2004 I made my first exhibitions in artistic ceramics modeling clay by hand. I create my pots all raised by hand and then I include decorative elements ».
Through ceramics, she expresses her love for the environment and the natural environment that surrounds her. «I really like the animal theme. Most of my works have references to animals and insects.
And that passion for nature is present among other collections in “Sandroides: survival” [1], a sculptural proposal in which the artist alerts from Camagüey the need to preserve the species that inhabit the planet, many in danger of extinction .
The creator explained that the series is made up of ten pieces in which she uses the ceramic and metal technique.
He added that the fauna has suffered damage and that from the artistic point of view it intends to warn that if the predation of the species continues in the future, the earth will be inhabited by mechanisms created by human ingenuity.
The artist created a set of futuristic animals whose surprising appeal lies not so much in sculptural accuracy or figurative violence, but rather, in the coherent integration of small mechanical universes into the corporeal architecture of the animal.
The author brings together, in the same piece, concepts such as dynamism, energy, mobility, transmission, lighting and closure-continuity.
Sandra is always present with her work in most of the salons and contests sponsored by the ACAA and other cultural institutions in the province of Camagüey, among other regions of the country. [2]

To the long list of her personal exhibitions is also added the project of transmuted pieces and the dragonflies… transmuted women entitled Peréceme with the curatorship of the art critic Pavel Alejandro Barrios. «I take the most sensitive parts of the dragonflies, the wings and the movement to incorporate the female body. In my ceramics I use cold skates as a cover ».
Sandra Navarro Valdés ventured into the topic of the Chinese horoscope after a thorough investigation on the subject.
«I captured all the animals of the Chinese horoscope and incorporated them into pots. Every time I prepare a project, I elaborate it thoroughly. First I create a sketch and then I bring it to the ceramics.
Most of my pieces have been marketed at the International Handicraft Fair (FIART), in Havana, convened by the Cuban Fund for Cultural Goods, in which I attended from 2009 to 2012. In 2009 I received a Mention for Best Stand Design. My Stand was always well visited and praised by specialists and spectators ».
Sandra has a beautiful curriculum as an artisan. “If I am part of an association like the ACCA, I have the responsibility of putting in the hands of the recipients a quality work with visual and aesthetic value.”
She feels infinite pride that her pieces beautify the homes of collectors and people in many countries of the world, especially in the United States, Canada, and other countries in America and Europe.
«I represented Cuba in 2018 at the Itinerant International Exhibition of Ceramics and Painting entitled Agua, in Canada, together with two colleagues of the city of Trinidad and four Canadians. I continued my theme by molding there in clay, four enameled pieces. I decided on species from the sea ».
Sandra Navarro Valdés reveals that her birth on February 17, 1959 significantly influenced her artistic projection. “Aquariums are very sensitive to the arts. Although the maternal environment that I grew up with was not artistic, my mother always looked for paintings and other resources so that I could make my drawings. She would lock me in the bathroom so that my three brothers would let me create. (Sandra is the oldest). I am convinced that her date of birth has to do with her inclination to art.
